"No income tax" isn't "no tax"
AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY levy no broad personal income tax — but property tax, sales tax, and entity-level business taxes vary significantly. TX, FL, and NH all have above-average effective property tax; WA has a 7% capital gains excise; TN, NH, and WA tax some pass-through entities; NV charges a Commerce Tax above $4M revenue.

    State residency rules vary
Unlike Canada's December 31 rule, US states use their own residency tests — statutory residency (often 183+ days), domicile, and source-rule sourcing. Moving mid-year usually requires a part-year return in both states. High-tax states (CA, NY, NJ, MA, MN) aggressively audit residency changes.
