    How we calculate your tax

    Federal income tax

Seven brackets from 10% to 37%, with thresholds that depend on your filing status. AGI = gross income minus half self-employment tax and above-the-line adjustments. Taxable income = AGI minus the larger of your standard deduction or itemised deductions, minus the §199A QBI deduction.

    Standard vs itemised

The calculator defaults to the standard deduction for your filing status ($16,100 Single / $32,200 MFJ / $24,150 HoH for 2026). Toggle Itemize to enter SALT, mortgage interest, charitable, and unreimbursed medical (above 7.5% AGI). SALT is capped at $40,000 ($20,000 MFS) for 2025-2029 under OBBBA. The calculator recommends whichever produces the lower federal tax.

    QBI §199A

Pass-through owners deduct up to 20% of Qualified Business Income (capped at 20% of taxable income excluding LTCG). Below the threshold ($191,950 single / $383,900 MFJ for 2026) the deduction is straightforward; above the threshold, SSTB exclusions and W-2 wage limits apply.

    State income tax

Each state's tax is computed on top of federal using its 2026 schedule. Progressive states use published brackets; flat-rate states apply their flat rate to AGI; the nine no-income-tax states (AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY) return $0. California includes the 1% Mental Health Services surtax (13.3% top); states with mandatory local income tax (NY/NYC, OH, PA, MI, MD, IN, KY, MO, AL) display a warning.

    Credits and self-employment

Child Tax Credit ($2,200 per qualifying child under 17) and Credit for Other Dependents ($500) apply, phasing out above $200k single / $400k MFJ. Self-employment tax (15.3% × 92.35% × SE net, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare) appears as a separate summary line; the dedicated Schedule SE calculator ships in Fork-04 with full ssWageBase mechanics.
